Service reminders by mileage or by time

Car Care: Maintenance Tracker is a free car maintenance app for iPhone that reminds you when an oil change or any other service is due, by mileage or by time, whichever comes first. It comes with 36 built-in maintenance items, such as engine oil, brakes, tires and the timing belt. Turn on trip detection and each drive adds its distance to the odometer, so the mileage reminders stay accurate without you typing in a reading.

Before service comes due

You get a notification when an item is due soon, then another when it is due. The built-in items start from recommended intervals, and you can change any of them. Distances are in miles or kilometers, as you choose.

A weekend car that covers a few hundred miles between oil changes stays far from its mileage limit, so its reminder comes when the time runs out.

Each item shows the miles and days left

Car Care marks every maintenance item as up to date, due soon or overdue, with the miles and days remaining. Beyond engine oil, brakes and tires, the built-in list covers filters, spark plugs, transmission fluid, the battery and more. The list follows each car's powertrain, so electric, hybrid and diesel cars get items of their own.

Add maintenance items of your own

Your car may need something the built-in list does not cover, such as greasing the trailer hitch before each towing season. Add it as an item of your own with a reminder by time, by mileage or both. You can also give it fields for what you note each time, such as the grease you used.

Inspection, registration and insurance renewals

Inspection, registration and insurance renewals have no mileage limit, so Car Care reminds you of them by date, counted from the last renewal you log. Attach the policy or the inspection report to the record, and each renewal keeps its paperwork and its next reminder together.

The Car Care Maintenance Categories screen with the Engine category expanded, listing items such as engine oil, air filter and drive belt with their status and the distance or days left.

Questions and answers

How do I know when my car is due for service?

Most service is due after a set distance or a set time, whichever comes first. Car Care: Maintenance Tracker, an app for iPhone, counts down to the next service of each maintenance item, from engine oil to brakes and tires, and shows the miles and days left. It sends a notification when service is due soon, and another when it is due.

Will Car Care tell me before service is due?

Yes. Car Care sends a "due soon" notification as an item gets close, then another when it is due. In between, the item shows how many miles and days are left.

How do I start getting service reminders?

Allow notifications for Car Care, then log the last service of each item you want reminders for, such as your latest oil change. Each reminder counts from that service, by mileage or by time, whichever comes first.

Can I change the service intervals?

Yes. Every item in Car Care starts from a recommended interval, and you can change any of them to match your owner's manual or what your mechanic advises. You can also hide the ones your car does not need.

Do I have to type in my mileage for the reminders to work?

No. Once you turn on trip detection in Car Care, each recorded trip adds its distance to the odometer, so your reminders stay accurate without typing the mileage. Fill-ups and services you log keep it current too, and you can correct the reading by hand at any time.

What happens to a reminder after my car is serviced?

Log the service, and each maintenance item on it starts counting again from that date and mileage. A scanned receipt does the same for each job Car Care recognizes on it, such as an oil change, and the same visit goes into the car's history and costs.

Does Car Care work for a hybrid, electric or diesel car?

Yes. You set each car's powertrain, and its maintenance items follow it. An electric car leaves out engine items such as oil and spark plugs and adds four items for the electric drive, among them the high-voltage battery and the regenerative brakes. A diesel adds the diesel particulate filter and AdBlue, and a hybrid has both the engine items and the electric ones.
